Take A Trip To The Joslyn Art Museum

People Looking at Modern Art

If you and your crew are on the hunt for something new and interesting to do, look no further than the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. The Joslyn Art Museum collects and showcases visual arts of the highest quality. They encourage appreciation and enjoyment of art for the most diverse audience.

History

Sarah H. Joslyn donated Nebraska’s largest art museum to the people of Omaha in loving memory of her late husband, George A. Joslyn. After her husband’s death, Sarah devoted herself to creating a memorial that would help spread their shared interests in music and art for everyone else to enjoy. The museum quickly received art collections from the Art Institute of Omaha, the Friends of Art, and several private anonymous donors.

Building

The extraordinary building was deemed as an important addition to the city of Omaha and modern American architecture. In 1938, it was listed as one of the 100 finest buildings in the United States. It took over three years to be constructed and costs close to $3 million to build. The three-level interior is made from 38 different types of marble from all around the world and includes stone from Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, and Morocco. The Walter and Suzanne Scott Pavilion, a 58,000 square-foot addition, was built in 1994 at a cost of $15.95 million. That pavilion connects the original building with the gorgeous glass Conagra Brands Atrium.

Collections & Exhibits

Since its opening in 1931, the Joslyn Art Museum has been home to many different pieces of artwork. The museum currently holds over 11,000 pieces.
