A nature walk is a great activity for relieving stress and getting exercise. With the help of our friends at AllTrails.com we’ve compiled a list of five of our favorite nature trails just a short drive from Omaha:
Hackberry, Hawthorn, Chickadee, Hickory, and Ridge Trail Loop
This 2.2-mile loop of trails includes the Hackberry, Hawthorn, Chickadee, Hickory, and Ridge Trails. Located near Bellevue, Nebraska, this trail system is accessible all year for walking, hiking, running, and nature walks.
Wabash Trace Nature Trail
The trail system was created in correlation with the rail-to-trail project. The project develops nature trails adjacent to railroad tracks. This particular trail runs 63 miles along the old Wabash train line from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Blanchard, Iowa. It’s beautiful, serene at times, and guaranteed to be an incredibly memorable experience.
Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge
The Bob Kerrey Bridge, also known as the Footbridge, spans 1.4 miles across the Missouri River connecting Omaha’s Riverfront to Council Bluffs. The bridge was named after Senator Bob Kerrey who secured funding for the bridge in 2008. Both sides connect to a paved trail system, perfect for biking.
Stream, Cottonwood and Missouri Trail
This 2.4-mile loop trail is an excellent location for spotting wildlife such as frogs, muskrats, and birds. The trail is an easy hike that follows a river through vast wetlands.
Swanson Park Trail
This trail system was created specifically for mountain biking, trail running, and equestrian activities. Its 4.8-mile length is designed as a loop that winds tightly through the hills in a relatively small span. At the midway point, you will come upon a paved section near the Bellevue Fire Department’s training center.
