Treat Your Tastebuds To This Tasty Tomato Sauce

Penne pasta with tomato sauce and parmesan cheese

Have you always wanted to make your own pasta sauce but thought it would be too difficult? While some sauces are exceptionally hard to make, that’s not the case with this classic tomato sauce with onion and butter. It’s so easy to make that you’ll wonder why you’ve exhausted yourself cooking complicated and ingredient-heavy sauces in the past.

Gather Your Ingredients

Head to the store to gather some ingredients before you start cooking this pasta sauce. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 pounds of ripe and fresh tomatoes
  • 5 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 medium-size onion
  • Salt
  • 1 pound of pasta
  • Parmigiana-Reggiano cheese

Make the Sauce

Begin by preparing the ingredients. You need to blanch and peel the tomatoes before roughly chopping them up. Next, cut the onion in half and peel it. Finally, grate the cheese so it will be fresh when you add it to your pasta. After you prepare the ingredients, you’ll be ready to start cooking.

Add the tomatoes to a saucepan. Then put in the salt, onion, and butter. Keep the pan uncovered while it slowly cooks. Bring it to a simmer and keep it there for 45 minutes. If the fat floats from the tomatoes before 45 minutes is up, you can stop cooking. Be sure to stir the sauce while it cooks, and use your wooden spoon to mash the large tomatoes down.

Once 45 minutes have passed, taste the sauce and add more salt as needed. Next, take out the two halves of the onion and throw them away. Add the noodles, and you’ll be ready to eat. It’s just that simple!

How Much Does the Recipe Feed?

This sauce makes enough for six servings. If you don’t eat it all, you can freeze it. Also, you can also make a batch for the sole purpose of freezing it to eat later. If you do that, make sure you remove the onion before putting it in the freezer. Otherwise, the onion will overpower the sauce.

You can freeze this pasta sauce for up to six months. When you decide to eat it, take it out of the freezer and let it thaw independently, as putting it on the stove or heating it in the microwave will change the flavor. Instead, just let it naturally thaw so it’s just as scrumptious when you made it.

Extra Tips

If you don’t like onions, you can leave them out of the recipe. It’s a matter of personal taste. Although, because the sauce is so easy to make, you can try it both ways and then select the one you prefer.

Once you make this pasta sauce, you’ll never buy sauce in a can or a jar again. Instead, you’ll dedicate a few minutes to making your own sauce from scratch. It’s so delicious that you might want to double the recipe, as your family is sure to beg for a second helping.
